You'd have to really love trains to like this one. The train is generally pulled by an old diesel shunter, pulling a half finished steam one. The line only runs a mile or so. Will be much better when the extension opens, but lack of funds seem to make that a distant dream.
A hidden gem right on our door step and we never even realised. This was our first visit here and we really enjoyed the ride on the steam train. The staff were dressed in period clothing were friendly and didn't mind posing for photos. There were a few different steam engines on display too besides the one we were riding on. The train carriages were comfortable we were in one of the compartments. Colouring books and crayons were available for the children. There is an old waiting room where you can buy your tickets and is also a cafe so you can have a drink or a bite to eat while you wait for the train. I love the old colliery and pump too. The whole place is steeped in history and the train ride takes you past another old colliery. Just my kind of place and look forward to visiting again soon.
My friend and I visited here for a 'Wonderful Wednesdays' experience. We booked tickets online for the 'Afternoon Tea'. This is one of two 'Wonderful Wednesday' options. Afternoon tea included sandwiches, cake and scones, bubbly and tea or coffee. I have to say the staff really made the experience; they treated us like royalty and were professional, but warm and friendly throughout. A big 'Thank you' to them all! They gave a wonderful service that I've not experienced in a long time. The food was the best quality, giving great value for money. I have to add here that I have never had scones like those that we had on the train. The bubbly smelt as good as it looked and tasted great.The train takes you on two rides out and back again while you are being pampered by the lovely smiling staff. There was a raffle on board which was drawn at the end of the ride. So no waiting.When we hadn't quite finished our drinks etc and were completely stuffed :) they let us stop on for a second ride which meant the whole two times out and two back again. They really did go the 'extra mile'. Thank you everyone for making out afternoon so special! An excellent experience all round.
I love visiting Elsecar Heritage centre especially as it is local. There are a lovely little range of boutique style shops that sell anything from clothes and handbags to wax prints and antiques plus many more. We also had a wonder around the back which I have never done before and discovered the old Elsecar train tracks and old 1795 Newcomen Engine which is the oldest steam engine in the world. There is also a soft play centre here so something for all the family. They also run events throughout the year. Lovely little place.
